My Journey into the Wild
My journey into the world of wildlife began in a simple, unexpected way — with a casual driving job at the Dopoi Centre in the Maasai Mara, a Maasai social justice and history learning centre. At the time, I did not yet know that this place, and the land surrounding it, would change my life forever.
On my first nights there, the wilderness introduced itself to me in its own powerful language. The distant roars of lions and the haunting calls of hyenas echoed through the darkness, waking me into a world I had never truly known. I lay there listening, filled with wonder, curiosity, and a deep sense that I was standing at the edge of something much bigger than myself.
At dawn, the Mara revealed another kind of magic. Hot air balloons floated silently across the wide skies, and as I watched them rise with the morning light, my curiosity grew — not only about the wildlife, but about the Maasai people, their land, and their deep connection to this powerful ecosystem.
The Defining Moment: The following day became a defining moment in my life. I found myself deep in the heart of the Maasai Mara with Prescott College students, witnessing a raw and unforgettable scene of the wild. Lions brought down a massive buffalo, and soon the surrounding plains came alive with sound and movement as nearly thirty hyenas gathered, each competing for a moment at the feast. The intensity, the noise, and the energy of that moment reshaped my understanding of nature.
Standing there, surrounded by life in its purest and most uncompromising form, something inside me changed. My mind, my soul, and my sense of purpose became deeply connected to the wilderness. From that moment on, I knew I was no longer just observing the wild — I was becoming part of it. That experience marked the true beginning of my journey as a professional safari guide, driven by respect, curiosity, and a lifelong commitment to the land and its stories.
